Finding out you are pregnant and going to be a mother is one of the best experiences in life.
However, the morning sickness that usually accompanies pregnancy, not so great.
According to Dr Hong Sze Ching, Associate Consultant at the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH) in Singapore, nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, commonly referred to as morning sickness is very common in pregnancy, with as many as 7 in 10 women experiencing morning sickness in pregnancy.
Fortunately for most, morning sickness usually ends before the end of the 1st trimester.
While morning sickness cannot be entirely prevented, there are ways to reduce the symptoms, and hence make the 1st 3 months more enjoyable.
1. Prop Yourself Up When Sleeping Or Resting
Avoid lying flat when resting, this is especially so after meals.
Use extra pillows to prop yourself up when sleeping.
2. Peppermint Tea
By far the most popular recommendation by mothers.
Its caffeine free, doesn’t cost much and easily available at all supermarkets or pharmacies.
3. Keep Hydrated
Doctors recommend small sips (at least 30ml) of water hourly.
4. Ice Cubes
1 surprising recommendation that came in from quite a number of expectant mothers was to suck on ice cubes a few times a day.
In addition to taking your mind off the morning sickness, it also helps keep you hydrated.
5. Acupressure Wrist Bands Or Acupuncture
You should be able to find a variety of brands of bands in your local pharmacy, health food and travel retail stores.
If you are thinking about trying acupuncture, speak first with your doctor and look or get recommendations for an acupuncturist who is trained to and has experience working with expectant mothers.
